Project 1, Part A
Taking Apart...
I bought a small purple reading light. Then took it all apart so every individual part of the reading light is separated. I chose this reading light as I am thinking of producing a desk lamp or a bedside lamp that includes apart of its design to be able to bend around. Also for it to maybe attach to the desk or bedside table.
Precedents...
1.
I thought that these two lights were rather interesting designs. I like how the light is something you can bring out and move back in to get various dimness degrees of light. And the bottom one with the light encased has a sort aesthetic pleasure to it.
2.
I though that this precedent is rather simple and unique. You can have various angles of light with this design which makes it unique yet it is so simple that all it is, is a block of wood, a 135 degree (I suspect) angles piece of metal or plastic and a light bulb.
3.
This design is pretty funky I think. I like how you are able to change the angle of which way the light shines. The light in the sleek white shell and the minimum-listicness of the wire stand hints at a more modern design which I quite like.
4.
My final precedent I found very intriguing with the light being held in a glass blown shell. I also found with this design that every glass blown shell will be different and can be made in different colours and arranged in a rather beautiful arrangement like in the top middle image. I also really like the idea of circular design.
Conceptual Ideas
1.
This concept cones towards the smaller point at the bottom so the light can move and spin on that the axis to a position that that suits you. The inside light is a little like a disco ball where this design has multiple bulbs encased by a clear plastic/glass dome. With this concept I wanted to go for something a little different where the light shade cones down instead of up like in a normal bedside lamp. I also wanted to create something more interesting with the actual lighting part and really like the idea of joint multiple light fixtures. I would use a strong plastic material for the base of the lamp and wire casing for the shade which I was thinking of using clear or plastic film. Wire will be holding up the actual light fixture. And I will be using LED's for the multiples lights.
3.
For this concept I went for a more contemporary look. It has either a clear or coloured plastic bowl where three or more lights can both spin or not spin around in, depending on what mood you are in. I really like this design and I think that it will be a good concept to work further on. Material used for this design would be a strong plastic for the base and a thinner and weaker plastic for the bowl and LED's for the lights.
4.
My fourth design looks again at the idea of multiple lights. I looked at the idea of having a lamp that can be adjustable for the users best liking. So these seven lights will be able to swivel up and down and with the flexible lamp stem you can create a angle of light which best serves your purpose. It also has a clamp with which is is able to clamp onto a desk or bedside table but will also be able to stand freely on the desk or table. A main material would be plastic for the clamp and light (LED) shells and a bendable material for its stem (flexible yet strong enough wire).
Proposed Solution
This is what I plan to make as my product. I wanted something stylish yet different. I also wanted something that I would actually use too. It is a further development of concept three. The coned cylinders will be some sort of soft material held up by wires. The LED lights will also be held up by wires that are attached to the base of the lamp. The base will made of plastic with a on and off switch on it.
